Signs That You May Have Sleep Apnea

There are conditions that we live with for a long time and walk around not realizing that we have them. It’s funny how we count some health disorders is normal and accept them when really, we are not supposed to. One of these disorders is the infamous sleep apnea that affects a large population of the adults in the world today. What most people agree that this is a disorder, most of them also don’t realize the significance and implication of having such a disorder especially to their health. This disorder manifests in the form of frequent pauses and breaks in breathing during sleep. These breaks have various causes, the first one being a miscommunication between the respiratory system and the brain. This happens in this way; when the respiratory system fails to send breath signals to the brain, a pause in breathing is caused. The breaks can also be caused by breath being interrupted by physical blockages. For example, the tongue can collapse in the airway and therefore obstruct proper breathing. This is one of the most common causes for this disorder and explains 85% of all the occurrences of sleep apnea.

Given that this disorder manifests during sleep, a lot of people hardly notice that they have it. There are however other symptoms that are experienced while awake that may signify the presence of this disorder. The first one is extreme mood swings. People tend to get moody when they’ve not had enough sleep and since sleep apnea affects the quality of sleep, it explains the moodiness. Symptoms like short temper, irritability and moodiness points towards the presence of this disorder. Moreover, sleep is now also causing high blood pressure which is also explained by the lack of quality sleep. What happens is that during a break when you are not breathing, the brain is not receiving enough oxygen and therefore the body responds by increasing blood pressure.

Waking up with headaches is also another common symptom of sleep apnea. This is a symptom that is closely related to the brain not receiving enough oxygen and the pressure in blood vessels increasing. The result is vascular headaches that basically come about because of all the pressure in the blood vessels. Other than these, obesity and being overweight also contributes to this sleep disorder mostly because of fat buildup in the throat area that ends up obstructing proper breathing. They act is a symptom and also as causes for sleep apnea. Losing weight is one of the solutions to curing sleep apnea among other options.
